Sumo is a Lusitano colt - a type of horse whose roots come from the Iberian Peninsula around 800 BC, and was developed through Portuguese breeding programs to produce horses for war and bull-fighting. In some regions Lusitanos are still used for bull-fighting today, but are also very popular with Dressage riders; their compact muscular stature, bravery, and intelligence, makes for a trainable horse suited to collected movements.

Sumo was selected at 10 days old for his bold, kind and curious personality. He is currently being kept as a stallion (intact male) due to his great bloodlines and sweet attitude, but without any pressure to excel at a particular discipline or enter any breeding program. Over the next few years he can decide who he wants to be, and whether that turns out to be a trail riding pony or a dressage superstar - we will love him just as much!
