Four Hooves of Impact
A message from PUMBA, a distinguished member of the Misty Herd
At Misty Meadows Equine Learning Center horses and humans work together to transform lives in physical, cognitive, social and emotional ways. Our fast-paced world has us all struggling to make time for self-care and connections with others, causing anxiety and low self-esteem, overwhelming emotions, and depression and substance use. We believe our uniquely effective approach to holistic wellness improves these issues, and we need your support.
My name is Pumba and I’m an 18-year-old paint horse gelding. I make an important impact with my four hooves and big heart. For almost half my life, I’ve been helping people feel safe and supported while they make personal discoveries that can lead to lasting physical, social, cognitive and emotional growth. As a member of Misty’s four-legged staff, I am writing to you because the Martha's Vineyard community needs our help.
Every day at Misty is a bit different, which I love! On Monday mornings, one of my favorite classes is about communicating with us using “Horse Speak”. I can feel the presence of all the students in this class change the longer they spend time with me. One of our students shared this:
“When Pumba approached me, I could feel his energy instantly. It was a combination of strength and calmness that I simply have never felt before. I felt honored to be in his presence, and I had a sense that he cared about my wellbeing. It was a truly humbling and healing experience.”
Did you know that riding has many physical benefits, too?
On Thursdays in the summertime, Camp Jabberwocky comes to Misty. Many students in that group have physical disabilities and use our ramp and lift system to get on me. One young woman in particular waits all year for her trip to Misty Meadows because I give her a sense of freedom and independence she can’t find anywhere else as I carry her around the farm. She has a great sense of humor and gives great scratches! Her joy is contagious for all who help her ride. I feel her body relax and her balance improve. She says the physical improvements stay with her for days after her ride!
There are so many ways you can help our island community. Here are some suggestions from the herd:
Coco says a gift of $5000 will help us renovate our bathroom to be handicapped accessible.
Finn would like a gift of $500 to support a veterans retreat day.
Bubbles suggests a monthly gift of $150 to feed a member of the herd.
Willow knows $50 covers the cost of one lesson for a child with autism.
Howie loves surprises! Every gift makes a special impact!
All student participation is subsidized by 70-100% which is only made possible by your continued contributions.
You are a valued member of the Misty Meadows Equine Learning Center herd and your donation is an integral part of changing lives, one horse experience at a time.
